PREFACE | STORY OF BASILICA | MASS TIMES | OFFICE | CONTACT
Chojnice, sometimes called the Pomeranian’s gate, is an exceptional town. Fulfilling a role of the front town it wrote a lot of very difficult and sorrowful experiences on the cards of its history. However forgetful of that, it revived many times and following the scenario of the organic work it created a new quality of life. Its conscious citizens, as it is up today, as if previous patricians had been recalled to new tasks, they permanently inspired nationals to responsible presence in the community of the town.
The most visible sign of these proceedings is fascinating Basilica of the Decapitation of St. John Baptist. Its monumental fronton requires disregarding the whole meanness and trusting the power of God. The history of the Basilica is a synthetic record of the town history. It is an irreplaceable history handbook of struggles of religious, cultural and even political face of the town. As far as cultural sphere is concerned I would like to remind a character of well known, also in Peiplin, Herman Han - a painter of an exceptional talent who was buried in Chojnice Basilica.
I bless heartily everybody who will go into ecstasies over the St. John’s Basilica because” it strikes somebody with fear this place, because here is a home of God and the havens’ gates”(Genesis 28,17).
